Luke 18:1 “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;”
Many people quit when they do not see their prayers answered according to their timing. From today's reading, God is instructing us to pray and not give up.
When we first start to develop new habits, especially the habit of consistent prayer, we pray with enthusiasm and vigour. Gradually, however, we become less and less excited about praying, and some eventually stop praying daily. It is at this point that we must not give up, but rather allow the Holy Spirit to help us.
Here are three reasons why we should persist in prayer daily:
1. Persistent prayer yields answers to prayer. The persistent widow cried out persistently; she kept coming again and again until she got her answer. In Luke 18:5, the Bible tells us, “...yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.”
2. Our spirit wins the war against our flesh. When we continually yield to our fleshly desires, we give the flesh power over our spirit. But if we obey the Holy Spirit and pray consistently, He becomes our Master and leads us to righteousness. Apostle Paul says in Romans 6:16 (NKJV), “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?” Present yourself to the Spirit through persistent prayer.
3. You’ll move from enduring to enjoying. Apostle Paul told the church in Corinth that he could pray in tongues more than they all (1 Corinthian 14:18). I believe Apostle Paul was able to do this because he enjoyed spending time with the Holy Spirit rather than just enduring his prayer time. At first, it may seem like a chore or task, but soon, you’ll begin to enjoy His presence.
Precious one, prayer is no easy task. However, as we continually yield ourselves to the Spirit of God and prayer, it will get easier, we’ll get good at it, and soon, we’ll enjoy praying!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, as I yield myself to You always, help me to be consistent in praying in Jesus’ name. Amen.
