Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Faith begins with knowing what God is saying or what He has said. Until we know what God says, it is not possible to have faith, since faith is “knowing what God says, and acting on it”. Without the knowledge of His Word, we will have an inoperative faith or no faith at all. Here are three main sources of knowledge of what God says:
1. We know what God says through His creation. Apostle Paul says in
Romans 1:20, “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse”.
Just as every design testifies of its designer, the great design of creation also testifies of a Creator. Creation testifies to the power and existence of God. Creation can’t preach the Gospel but bears testimony about God—it “declares the glory of God” (Psalms 19:1, NKJV).
2. We know what God says through the Scriptures. The Word of God is the basic source of divine knowledge given to mankind. To exercise faith in God demands that we know the Word. The Bible says in
Romans 10:17, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
It is therefore not possible to practise true faith without knowing the Bible. A man of faith must necessarily be a man of the Bible. The Word of God is the basic foundation on which true faith stands.
3. We know what God says through revelation. Revelation is the impartation of divine intelligence or knowledge by the Holy Spirit to the mind of man. When we are born again, the Spirit of God regenerates our human spirit and the Holy Spirit comes to live in us. During meditation on the Scriptures and prayer, the mind is renewed and is able to receive this revelation that comes from the inner man.
Precious one, our faith will be inoperative without knowledge of what God says. We have no excuse not to have faith, since we can have knowledge through His creation, the Scriptures, and through revelation.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, as I get to know You more and know Your Word, strengthen me in faith, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
